Introduction

The practice of clinical pharmacy in South Africa is a new and developing field of pharmacy.  Since there are limited opportunities for pharmacists to train as clinical pharmacists, the course was developed to empower hospital pharmacists to perform more ward-based pharmaceutical care functions.

The course is using a system-based approach to include knowledge on disease process, pathophysiology, management and monitoring of pharmacotherapy of the different organ systems.

Who Should Enrol

The certificate short course is intended for pharmacists with a BPharm or equivalent qualification with an interest in ward and clinical pharmacy. Pharmacist may also enroll for single modules to use as continued professional development.

Course Content

The course consist of six modules that can be completed separately for the purposes of CPD’s or all six to receive a certificate in clinical skills for ward-based pharmacists.  The six modules included in the course are:

  • Pharmaceutical care and interpreting laboratory results
  • Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapeutics
  • Psychiatric and Neuro Pharmaceotherapeutics
  • Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapeutics
  • Respiratory Pharmaceotherapeutics
  • Renal Pharmacotherapeutics

Course Highlights

The clinical skills for ward based pharmacists will empower pharmacists to render pharmaceutical care to patients at ward-level and include comprehensive knowledge on disease processes, the management of disease and the monitoring of patient pharmacotherapy with the goal of improving patient outcomes.
