Tinea pedis (commonly referred to as “Athlete’s Foot”) is thought to be the world's most common dermatophytosis. Reportedly, 70% of the population will be infected with tinea pedis at some time.
Acne is an inflammatory condition affecting the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. It may result in permanent scarring, poor self-image, anxiety and depression. Acne is prevalent in adolescents and young adults with 85% of 16–18-year-olds affected. It may even occur in children and adults of any age. The condition usually affects the face but may occur on the neck, chest and back.
Skin barrier: The importance of the maintenance and repair thereof
The skin is the outermost layer of the body granting protection against the environment. This biologically active barrier carefully controls the amount of water lost through the skin (called trans-epidermal water loss, TEWL) and keeps allergens and pathogens outside.
Differential diagnosis between bacterial and fungal infections
Skin infections are diseases and conditions caused by or related to an external organism and can include infestation by mites and insects. Organisms can also cause inflammatory skin diseases by provoking an innate or acquired immune reaction to them e.g. ide reaction, Lyme disease (erythema migrans) and erythema nodosum.
